Obituary for Joan Souza

Joan Souza
Sister Joan E. Souza, 79, is a religious sister of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities. She went home to God on February 7, at St. Francis Hospice, Nuuanu. Sr. Joan was born in Eleele, Kauai, to Antone U. and Mary Brun Souza, who both worked for Our Lady Queen of Peace Basilica Cathedral. Her religious name, Sr. Regina Pacis, honored this church.

She would have celebrated her 60th jubilee, this Spring. In 1972, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Chaminade University. She was also a certified nurse aid.

Sister Joan ministered in Catholic schools and religious education departments, here in Hawaii (Hilo, Pearl City, Manoa, and Waialua) and on the mainland (Central New York).
Most recently, she worked as a sacristan and a receptionist at the St. Francis Healthcare Systems of Hawaii. At hospice, she reached out to other patients and their families. She is famous for her “ono delicious” cookies and bottled jams and jellies.

Sr. Joan is survived by her siblings Sister Grace Michael Souza (Ewa Beach), Joseph (Anita from Boniflay, FL) and Sister-In-law, Alberta Souza (Wahiawa); 2 nieces, 2 nephews, as well as, a number of grand and great grand nieces and nephews; and her religious congregation, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities. Her brother Francis preceded her.

Services will be held at the St. Francis Convent Chapel, 2715 Pamoa Road, on the St. Francis School campus. Visitation is on: Friday, February 16, from 3:00 – 6:00 PM, Mass will follow at 6:30PM. Interment will be Saturday, at Diamond Head Memorial Park at 9:00 AM. Donations may be made to The Sisters of St. Francis.
